Wedding venues, through a photographer's eyes

Where the light falls, where to slip away for portraits, and how the day flows at each place.

Tell me your story

Every venue photographs differently. One has a porch that glows at sunset, another has a ceremony lawn that sits in shade by four o'clock. Knowing that ahead of time changes how we plan your timeline.

These guides are what I'd tell you over coffee: what the place is like, where I'd take you for portraits, and the details worth planning around. I'm based in Asheville and photograph weddings across Western North Carolina and in Charlotte. Venue names and facts come from each venue's own site, so check with your coordinator for anything that may have changed.

What I look for at a venue

Before a wedding I want to know three things: where the sun sets relative to the ceremony, where we can slip away for ten quiet minutes, and where we'll go if it rains. Everything else, the furniture, the flowers, the guest flow, follows from those.

A porch that faces west, a long lane under old trees, a big window in the getting-ready room. These small details end up shaping the whole gallery.

Mountain venues and city venues

Mountain venues give us long views and quick-changing weather. The sun drops behind the ridges earlier than the official sunset, and fog can roll in at the perfect or the worst moment, so we build a little room into the timeline.

Charlotte venues give us gardens, historic houses, stone and glass. Golden hour lasts longer on open lawns, and blue hour in the city is worth staying out for.

Questions

Asked and answered

Is my venue not on the list?

That's fine. These are a starting point, not a limit. I'm happy to photograph anywhere, and I'll study the light and the property before your day.

Do you visit the venue before the wedding?

If we can, walking the property at the same time of day as your ceremony helps a lot. If not, I study the layout and the sun direction ahead of time and we plan the timeline together.
