Duke Mansion wedding photography in Myers Park

A 1915 Colonial Revival house, four and a half acres of garden and big old trees. At the Duke Mansion, the photographs are mostly about letting the grounds do the work.

Tell me your story

I am a film-inspired photographer based in Asheville, and I travel to Charlotte for weddings and elopements, about 130 miles and two hours and ten minutes each way. Everything below comes from the venue's own website, and from how I would think about light and time there.

The mansion is at 400 Hermitage Road in Myers Park. Its own history page says the home was built in 1915 by Zeb Taylor in the then-new Myers Park neighborhood, a fine example of Colonial Revival architecture. James B. Duke bought it in 1919 and tripled its size. It was placed on local, state and national historic registers in 1977.

How the day is laid out

The venue describes a simple shape for the day. The ceremony is on McGuire Lawn, dinner is outdoors on Barnhardt Terrace, which can be tented, and dancing moves indoors to the Levine Living Room and the Duke Endowment Solarium. Guests get all 20 overnight rooms, and the entire mansion is reserved for the evening of the wedding. The Duke Mansion hosts a maximum of 25 weddings a year, and events must conclude by 11 p.m.

For photos, that structure is useful. The lawn and the terrace are outside, so the light will lead the schedule. The Living Room and the Solarium are the last room of the night, so I would keep a little time at the end for a slow dance in the glass-enclosed solarium.

Portrait spots and light

The Mary D.B.T. Semans Gardens cover four and a half acres of historic trees, shrubs and flowers. The mansion says they are surrounded by majestic old trees, have sitting areas and paths, and bloom year-round. The first new gardens were dedicated in 2014 and more were added in 2015.

Old trees mean dappled shade, and dappled light is lovely on skin but tricky on a white dress. I would do couple portraits in the gardens before the ceremony if you want to see each other first, or right after the ceremony, in the softer light before dinner. On the lawn I would step back for a long, quiet frame of the two of you small in front of the house, if the angle works when we walk the grounds. After sunset, the warm terrace and the lit windows make a good last set.

  • McGuire Lawn: the ceremony, with the house behind
  • Semans Gardens: paths, sitting areas and old trees for portraits
  • Barnhardt Terrace: dinner, string lights and golden hour in the open air
  • Solarium and Living Room: the last dance, in warm indoor light

Season and the practical bits

Late spring and fall are the classic seasons for a garden estate like this. In late June, sunset is a little before nine, which leaves long evenings, and in December it is closer to five o'clock, so the ceremony needs to be earlier. A tent must be booked in case of rain, according to the venue's FAQ, so plan for a rain tent in your budget.

If you hire me and I am not on the venue's preferred list, the Catering Manager must approve me in advance, and each vendor provides a certificate of liability 72 hours before the event. I would take care of that with you. The mansion also offers separate photography sessions and bridal portraits, Monday to Thursday, bookable up to 30 days in advance. The gardens are free and open for strolling during daylight hours.
