Grandfather Mountain: two places, two sets of rules
People say Grandfather Mountain as if it were one place. It is two: the private attraction with the Mile High Swinging Bridge, and a separate, free state park. The rules differ, so I start there.
The attraction is owned and operated by the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation, at 2050 Blowing Rock Highway in Linville. The state park is run by North Carolina State Parks, is free to access, and is not part of the attraction. The state park's page says the attraction and its swinging bridge are not part of the park and charge an entrance fee.
What I can do is walk you through how each side handles portrait photography, because the answers are surprisingly different from what most blogs say.

The attraction: portraits are possible, but not casual
The attraction's photography policy says engagement, bridal, wedding or any other portrait sessions are not permitted without written consent. It also says approvals for commercial or portrait photography inside the park are extremely limited and rarely permitted, and that paying admission does not give you permission to shoot. In the same breath, a separate portrait sessions page describes a booking process.
That process: submit the Engagement and Portrait Photography Inquiry Form at least two weeks ahead. MacRae Meadows is available during park hours at select times, and after hours some locations may be available, including the Mile High Swinging Bridge, Half Moon Overlook, Linville Peak and Scheer Bluff. The Foundation may approve or decline any request, and availability is extremely limited on holiday weekends and through peak fall color, late September to October.
Rules that shape the session
Everyone must leave the park before dark, and session end times are set in advance. Large props are not allowed. MacRae Meadows does not allow vehicles, does not give you exclusive access, and has no restrooms. Stay on designated trails and pathways at all times, which includes the paths at the Swinging Bridge. Drones are strictly prohibited.
That last-light limit is the part I would plan around. Warm late-day light is what I love, and this setup means the session ends at dusk, not after it. I would book the latest slot the Foundation will offer.

Weddings and elopements
The attraction's weddings page says it is currently not hosting or booking any weddings or elopements in the park, and that new policies and pricing for special events will be shared later in 2026. As of October 28, 2026 that was the current wording. If an elopement here is your dream, I would check back before you plan around it.
The state park side
Grandfather Mountain State Park is a separate hiking area. The park says some large events such as weddings may need a Special Activity Permit at least 14 days ahead, and that photography and film permits are available through the state's permit process. The upper part of the trail, the campsite and the parking area have partly reopened after storm recovery, so follow the signs. I would ask the park office about a paid session before planning one.
