Chimney Rock and Lake Lure couples sessions

A 315-foot rock spire, a 404-foot waterfall and a lake below. Chimney Rock is a place with real drama, and a few layers of rules that are worth understanding before you book.

Tell me your story

Chimney Rock State Park is in Rutherford County, about 25 miles southeast of Asheville, overlooking Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. The state park has three access areas: Chimney Rock, Rumbling Bald, and Eagle Rock. The main Chimney Rock area is a fee-based attraction run by Chimney Rock Management LLC, which is why the permits come in two layers.

What I can do is lay out how I would plan a session, and what each official source says.

Who sets the rules

North Carolina State Parks treat paid professional photography for events such as engagements or weddings as commercial photography. That takes a park Special Activity Permit, then a state film permit from the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. The state page asks for the park permit at least two weeks ahead.

The attraction itself, Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park, runs its own wedding bookings. Its wedding page does not mention outside photographers, fees for them, or any photo permit, so I would call its Groups and Education office before assuming anything.

The ceremony spots

The attraction lists six wedding venues. Chimney Rock itself, reached by a 26-story elevator ride and 44 stairs, takes up to 15 guests. Hickory Nut Falls also takes up to 15, with a moderate 1.5 mile round-trip hike. Lake Lure Lookout takes up to 10. Vista Rock takes up to 15 and needs about 150 stairs on the Outcroppings Trail. The Outdoor Classroom takes 70 and the Pavilion up to 150.

Availability is seasonal, and most venues note no holidays or holiday weekends. Reservations are required. Wedding fees on the page start at $175 for up to five guests, and admission is charged per person on top.

What is open now

The state park page says hiking is only partly open. Weed Patch Mountain Trail, Tunnel Trail and Riverwalk Trail are closed, and so are the bike trails. Eagle Rock is closed until further notice, and so is Buffalo Creek Park in Lake Lure, the only parking for it. The attraction's gate runs 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. from March through October, and hours and prices change in January, March and November.

Rumbling Bald is the free access area, with a 1.5 mile hiking trail and a more rugged feel. If you want a quieter, more private session, I would look there first, and check its permit status the same way.

Light and how I would plan it

A gorge holds shadow, so the sun reaches the rock face and the lake at different times than on an open ridge. I would walk it with you on a first visit as a guest and decide where the light falls before booking an hour for photographs. Late afternoon is my default, and a weekday keeps things calm.
