Gardens beside Lake Wylie, a glass conservatory full of orchids, and a long list of rules that are worth knowing before you plan. I will walk you through them.
Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is in Belmont, on the shore of Lake Wylie, about twenty miles from Uptown Charlotte. I am an Asheville photographer and I travel to the Charlotte area, around 130 miles and two hours and ten minutes from home.
The Conservancy says the gardens themselves cover about 90 acres within a property of over 380 acres. That is a lot of ground to choose from, which is a good thing for a session, because we can find a quiet corner even on a busy day.

The rule that matters most: reserve the session
As of October 2026, the garden's photography policy says a reservation is necessary for anyone who wants to use the gardens as a backdrop for posed or directed photography. The list it gives includes weddings, engagements, family, maternity, portfolio and other posed portraits, paid or unpaid. Casual snapshots for personal use are fine without a booking.
Professional gear such as light stands and bounce cards requires an official photo session booking, and drones need prior approval from the Private Events team. Selling photos taken on the grounds without written consent is prohibited. Sessions are booked and paid for in advance through the Private Events team, and the garden lists photo session packages with a two-week advance booking window. An evening option outside business hours runs 4 to 8 p.m. Prices are on the garden's own page, so I will not quote them here. If we choose this garden, the session is booked with the garden before we shoot, so please do not just turn up with a camera.
What I would photograph
The William H. Williamson, III Conservatory is described as an 8,000-square-foot, five-story glass house for orchids and tropical plants, with a waterfall. Light in a glass house is soft and humid and a little gold, and it suits quiet portraits and maternity. Outside, the garden has a Four Seasons Garden by the Garden Pavilion, a White Garden and a Perennial Garden, according to the Conservancy's pages. Charlotte's visitor bureau suggests shots among tropical plants and orchids inside the conservatory and native plants along the trails.
I would pick two or three settings and stay long in each, not hurry through twenty. A garden session works best when you forget the camera: a slow walk, a hand on a shoulder, someone laughing at a joke you cannot hear.
Conservatory: soft, glass-filtered light and green depth
Four Seasons Garden: color that changes with the month
Open lawns and paths: golden hour and long shadows
Garden Pavilion area: easy paths and a place to pause

Season, timing and what to bring
Late spring and early summer bring the most color. Autumn gives warm tones and long light. Winter is quieter and the glass house stays green, so an indoor tropical backdrop can rescue a cold day. Final admission is a half hour before the Gardens close, so check the hours page before you plan.
Wear something that moves well among plants, and avoid stiff or heavy fabric. Think soft cream, deep green, rust or blush. Bring water, and shoes that can handle gravel paths.

Questions
Asked and answered
Do we need a reservation for photos at Daniel Stowe?
For posed or directed photography, yes. The garden's policy asks for a reserved session through its Private Events team. Quick personal snapshots do not need one.
How much does a session cost?
The garden publishes photo session packages on its own site. I do not quote them here because they can change. Ask the Private Events team for current rates.
How far is it from Charlotte and from Asheville?
The Conservancy places it about twenty miles from Uptown Charlotte. From Asheville, Charlotte is about two hours and ten minutes, and I would build in extra drive time for the garden.

I'm based in Asheville and travel to Charlotte for sessions, elopements and weddings. Tell me where you are, and travel details come with your collections.
