From Charlotte to the mountains

A weekend, a mountain and a promise. How Charlotte couples elope in the Blue Ridge.

Tell me your story

Charlotte is a great city to live in and not a bad one to get married in. But a lot of couples who write to me from Charlotte have the same quiet wish: they want to say their vows somewhere with a view and nobody else around.

The mountains are close enough to make that easy. I live up here outside Asheville, so I know which spots feel wild without a brutal hike, where the light falls at sunrise, and which places need a permit.

How far is it, really?

I measured these from Uptown Charlotte with a mapping service, without traffic, so give yourself extra time on a Friday afternoon:

  • Chimney Rock and Lake Lure: about 2 hours (roughly 94 miles).
  • Blowing Rock and the High Country: about 2 hours (roughly 94 miles).
  • Asheville and Biltmore: about 2 hours 15 minutes (roughly 128 to 130 miles).
  • DuPont State Forest near Brevard: about 2 hours 30 minutes.
  • Craggy Gardens on the Blue Ridge Parkway: about 2 hours 45 minutes.
  • Black Balsam Knob: about 3 hours.

A simple weekend plan

Drive up Friday after work and stay near your location. Sleep, or try to. Wake before dawn, get dressed with coffee, and meet me at the trailhead in the dark.

We walk up as the sky turns pink, say your vows as the sun comes over the ridges, and spend the next hour or two wandering, laughing and taking it all in. Then a long breakfast in town, a nap, and maybe a sunset picnic. You're home Sunday, married.

If sunrise isn't your thing, flip it: golden hour vows Saturday evening, dinner after, and a slow drive home.

Choosing your mountain

Craggy Gardens has twisted trees, rock outcrops and long views from the Parkway. Graveyard Fields is a high open valley with waterfalls. DuPont has meadows and forest. Chimney Rock and Lake Lure are the closest to Charlotte, and Mount Mitchell is the highest peak in the East. Famous balds like Max Patch and Black Balsam are places the Forest Service has asked people not to use for weddings or photo sessions, so I'll steer us somewhere just as beautiful where we're welcome.

Permits and paperwork

Public lands each have their own rules for ceremonies and photography, and they change. Each location guide on this site summarizes what the managing agency says and links to its official page, and I'll double check for your date.

In North Carolina you'll need a marriage license from a county Register of Deeds. Buncombe County's site says a license is valid for 60 days, can be used anywhere in North Carolina, and must be signed by your officiant and two witnesses who are 18 or older. You can get it in Mecklenburg County before you drive up. Check your county's current requirements.

Questions

Asked and answered

Do we need witnesses to elope in North Carolina?

Yes. North Carolina law requires at least two witnesses at the ceremony, and they sign the license along with your officiant. Some couples bring two friends, some bring parents.

What if the weather is bad?

Mountain weather changes fast. We keep a backup location and a flexible start time, and fog or soft clouds often make the most cinematic photos of all. If conditions are unsafe, we talk through a new plan together.
