Freedom Park sessions for couples, families & maternity
A lake, bridges and old trees in the middle of the city. Freedom Park is the Charlotte location I would pick for a slow, soft, green session with no skyline at all.
I am based in Asheville. For Charlotte sessions I drive about two hours and ten minutes, 130 miles, and I only choose places I would be glad to spend a long afternoon in. Here is how I would photograph you at Freedom Park, and what to check before you book.
Freedom Park is a Mecklenburg County park at 2435 Cumberland Avenue, in the Dilworth area. The county calls its lake a seven-acre manmade lake in one of its most popular urban parks, with fishing piers and paved walkways near the shore.

The lake loop and the bridges
Charlotte's visitor bureau lists Freedom Park among its photo spots and points to the bridges, stairways, the pond and the foliage. That matches how I like to work: structure to lean on, water for reflections, and trees for shade and layers.
A paved path circles the water, which makes it a very good walking park. For families I would use the loop as a loose route: stop at a bridge, let the kids run ahead, catch the parents looking at each other over small heads. For maternity, the water and the shade give soft, even light, and a slow loop means no one has to stand for long.
When the park looks its best
This is a leafy park, so seasons matter. Spring brings new green and softer crowds early in the day. Summer is lush but hot, so I would book early morning or the last hour before sunset. Autumn color suits the water. Winter is quiet, with bare branches and low sun, and a dark coat against pale ground looks good in black and white.
Because trees filter the light, I would pick the hour for the glow, not the sky. Early evening usually gives that warm, filtered look. Midday under a canopy turns spotty, so I would avoid it.

Things to check before the date
The county has a project page on pond dredging at Freedom Park and Park Road Park, and the Charlotte Museum of Nature is being developed on the grounds. I could not read a current schedule for either, so ask Park and Recreation whether any work will change the lake or the paths on your date.
As of October 2026 I did not find an official county page on professional photography permits. Check current rules with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, 980-314-1000, before booking. Weekends, festivals and picnics fill the park, so a weekday morning is my pick for quiet.

Questions
Asked and answered
Is Freedom Park good for family photos?
Yes. The paved loop, the bridges and the open lawns give children room to move, and parents get easy walking. I would keep the plan loose and let the kids lead.
Can we do a maternity session at Freedom Park?
Yes. Shade, water and benches suit a maternity session. I would pick a cooler hour and keep walking short.
Will anything be under construction?
The county lists pond dredging and a museum project on its site. I could not confirm timing, so check with Park and Recreation for your date.
