Black Balsam Knob: what to know before a photo session
People love Black Balsam for photos, and the Forest Service has asked the public to stop holding weddings and photo sessions there. I'd rather tell you that now than after you've picked a date.
Black Balsam sits beside the Blue Ridge Parkway, but it is not Parkway land. The Park Service's own wedding page lists Black Balsam Knob as outside Parkway jurisdiction and under the U.S. Forest Service, in Pisgah National Forest. That one fact decides which rules apply to you.
I live in Asheville and I understand why it tempts couples. I also take the Forest Service's request seriously, so I do not plan paid sessions there. This page is the honest version of a location guide: what the agency says, what it means for a photo session, and what I would suggest instead.

What the Forest Service says
On its events and commercial permits page, last updated February 25, 2026, the Forest Service says certain locations in North Carolina's national forests are not suitable for weddings or photography sessions. Black Balsam, which it describes as adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway, is on that list. The stated reasons are limited parking and safety, because visitors end up parked along the road.
The request stands until those parking and safety problems can be resolved. For photographers who already hold a two year wedding and elopement permit, the page adds that commercial use of Black Balsam is barred on holidays and holiday weekends.
If you are simply hiking
Walking there for yourselves is a different thing from booking a photographer, and I am not telling anyone to stay home. If you go, a few official details help. The trailhead is reached from the Parkway by turning onto FS 816 just past milepost 420. The Forest Service lists no restrooms and no drinking water, and a Pisgah bear canister requirement is active.
The Ivestor Gap Trail is listed as easy, 3.7 miles, with about 130 feet of elevation change. Where it enters the Shining Rock Wilderness, a group limit of ten people is enforced and campfires are not allowed. High exposed ground is windy and cold even in summer, so pack layers.

Where I would take you instead
If what you love is that high, open, long-view feeling, I would send you to Craggy Gardens on the Parkway, where there is a clear permit path with the Park Service and a short trail to a wide summit view. I would also look at Mount Mitchell, which runs through the state park permit process.
For a softer, lower-effort day, the North Carolina Arboretum says professional portrait sessions do not need a permit. Each of those has its own page here with the details.
Light, if you do go
Open ridgelines catch light from several directions, so late afternoon into sunset is the warmest window and early morning is the quietest. I would pick a weekday, arrive early, and leave the parking area to someone else if it looks full.

Questions
Asked and answered
Can I book you for an elopement or engagement session at Black Balsam Knob?
No, and I want to be clear about why. The Forest Service asks the public not to hold weddings or photography sessions there because of parking and safety problems. I would suggest another spot with the same open feeling.
Does Black Balsam need a Blue Ridge Parkway permit?
The Park Service says Black Balsam Knob is outside its jurisdiction. It is Pisgah National Forest land, so you would contact the Forest Service, not the Parkway, and the Forest Service currently asks people not to hold sessions there.
What is a good alternative nearby?
Craggy Gardens on the Parkway has a defined Park Service permit process, and the North Carolina Arboretum permits professional portrait sessions without a permit. See their pages for details.
