Big water, long shorelines and a sky that opens up. Two public parks give Lake Norman sessions very different looks, and each has its own rules for photographers.
Lake Norman is north of Charlotte, and a session here feels like a short trip away from the city. I am based in Asheville, and I travel to Charlotte-area sessions: 130 miles, about two hours and ten minutes, to Charlotte itself. Here is how I would plan a session on the lake.
I am naming two public parks so that we work from land you can actually walk onto.

Lake Norman State Park
The park is in Iredell County at 759 State Park Road in Troutman, about 40 miles north of Charlotte, according to NC State Parks. The state calls the namesake lake the largest manmade lake in North Carolina, and the park covers about 17 miles of its northern shoreline. Two islands in the lake hold heron rookeries with more than 25 great blue heron nests. The park also has a lake beach and bathhouse, a separate Park Lake behind a dam for quiet paddling, and trails: the page lists 38 miles of hiking and says the Itusi Trail offers nearly 31 miles of single-track.
For a session I would use quiet shoreline and woods, away from the swim beach and its crowds. Hiking trails are open 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Because the park has trails and water, it suits couples who want a walk and a quiet afternoon.
Photography at the state park
This is the rule to know. As of October 2026, NC State Parks says permits are required to conduct commercial film or photography in state parks. It defines commercial photography as including paid professional photography sessions for events, such as engagements or weddings. The park rules page says commercial photography is prohibited except when authorized by a Special Activity Permit.
The Special Activity Permit should be submitted at least two weeks ahead, and a DNCR Film Permit at least one week ahead. The page lists no photography fee and says the park superintendent will advise you of any fees. So if we choose the state park, I would apply early, to the park, and tell you the plan. Contact the park at 704-528-6350 or lake.norman@ncparks.gov with questions.

Jetton Park, in Cornelius
Jetton Park is a Mecklenburg County park at 19000 Jetton Road in Cornelius, on Lake Norman. The county describes 104 acres with a beach, picnic decks, a Waterfront Hall, a playground, bike and walking trails and a formal garden, and says swimming is not allowed at the beach. It is in Mecklenburg County, so it is the easier drive from Charlotte.
The county's pages I found do not list photography permit rules for portrait sessions. Check current rules with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, 980-314-1000, before booking. Also check the lake's water-quality advisories if we plan any wading, as the county has posted no-swim notices in the past.
Light and timing on the lake
Open water gives you a lot of sky. Golden hour on the shoreline is soft and long, and a cloudy day turns the lake silver. Check where the shoreline faces on your date, using a sunset map, before choosing a spot: whether you get sunset on the water or a glow behind trees changes the plan. Weekday mornings and shoulder seasons are quieter. Summer weekends bring boats, noise and crowds, so I would book early or late in the day.
