Uptown Charlotte couples & engagement sessions

Glass towers, old stone, a park with a skyline behind it. Uptown is the city side of Charlotte, and it photographs best when we move slowly and let the light do the work.

Tell me your story

I live and work in Asheville, and I travel to Charlotte for sessions. It is 130 miles, about two hours and ten minutes by car, so I plan Charlotte days carefully: a calm start, a real walk, and a light plan that does not depend on guessing. Here is how I would approach an Uptown session with you.

Uptown is where Trade Street meets Tryon Street. The name comes from the high ground at that crossing, and the city grew outward from there. Today it is towers, plazas, museums and small green pockets packed close together, which means a lot of variety inside a few blocks.

What the frames are made of

I am drawn to city frames with texture: a storefront window that doubles the two of you, a revolving door, a stone archway that makes a couple look small and a little cinematic. Uptown gives you glass and steel on one side and older stone and brick on the other.

Charlotte's visitor bureau points to a few anchors worth knowing. Romare Bearden Park looks out toward the skyscrapers. The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, the Mint Museum Uptown and the Harvey B. Gantt Center sit side by side on the arts campus, and the Mint's atrium has a 60 by 60 foot glass wall facing Levine Avenue of the Arts. The Latta Arcade, a 1914 arcade, is singled out for its natural light.

  • Romare Bearden Park: lawn, water features, skyline behind you
  • The arts campus: glass, mirrored sculpture and clean modern lines
  • Fourth Ward Park: a lawn, a fountain and quieter shade
  • Tryon and Trade: the crossing that gives Uptown its name

Chasing city light

Tall buildings make their own weather. At midday the streets become bright slots with hard shadows, and glass throws light where you do not expect it. Early morning on a weekday is my favorite: low sun skims between the towers, the sidewalks are nearly empty, and we can walk block to block without a crowd.

Golden hour works too, but it arrives in pieces. We watch for the few minutes when low sun clears a building and lights a face or a stone wall, then move on to the next opening. After sunset, the blue hour with the buildings lit is the other moment I like, and it is the one that gives city sessions their film-still feel. I would walk the route with you in mind, and we would build the order around the light on your day.

Crowds, game days and permits

Bank of America Stadium is a block from Romare Bearden Park and the Charlotte Knights play at Truist Field across the street, so event days change everything. I would check the Panthers and Knights schedules before we choose a date.

Uptown is a patchwork of city sidewalks, county park land, plazas and private or corporate property, so there is no single rulebook. As of October 2026 I could not find an official page that spells out still photography permits for Uptown public spaces. Check current rules with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation (980-314-1000) for the parks, and with the property owner for any plaza or building. Museums set their own photo policies. I would sort this out with you before the date, not on the sidewalk.

Wardrobe and pace

Bring something with movement, like a coat, a skirt or a long sleeve, because wind between buildings is free choreography. Pick colors that will hold against concrete and glass: warm neutrals, deep green, a single bold piece. Wear shoes you can walk in. Uptown looks small on a map and long on foot.

Questions

Asked and answered

Do you have a studio or address in Charlotte?

No. I am based in Asheville and travel to Charlotte for sessions. The drive is about two hours and ten minutes, and I plan the day around it.

What time of day is best for Uptown?

Early morning on a weekday for quiet streets and low light between the buildings, or the hour around sunset when the towers light up. Midday is the hardest light.

Do we need a permit to shoot in Uptown?

It depends on where we stand. I could not find an official Uptown-wide rule, so we check with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation for parks and with owners of plazas and buildings before the date.
